A note to Alberta ‘pipe dreamers’ who want to traverse BC lands and waters ..Please ,BEFOREHAND, discuss routing plans with local local leaders and officials !
The President and CEO of Enbridge was once quoted in the press about ‘the possibility’ of moving out of Douglas Channel (Kitimat) …..and now Alberta Premier,Jim Prentice says there are “other options besides Kitimat from which to unload unrefined heavy oil onto tankers” …and then days later ‘forgot’ what he’d said !.. And now we have he UBCM convention ready to challenge the dumb Kinder Morgan proposed routing through Burrard Inlet and the busy Salish Sea shipping lanes which potentially threatens these busy waters, and shores and waters in Southern BC and Washington state…
Since there is NO SCIENTIFICALLY PROVEN, field DEMONSTRATED method, for handling bitumen spills in typical ocean conditions we suggest that you
Install your terminal and shipping routes where the probability and consequences of bitumen spills is minimized—that is ,NOT DOUGLAS CHANNEL—or the busy SALISH SEA SHIPPING LANES.. It’s simple; build ONE COMBINED PIPELINES SYSTEM from Alberta to Port Simpson…and from there ship directly to world markets.
Mr. Harper could now hear and work with our mayors ,and instruct the NEB to order a ‘pipelines route change’ ….and FIX THE BC PIPELINES MESS,NOW—and see happier faces at BC polls…in October 2015 !
http://www.calgaryherald.com/business/Ewart%2BPrentice%2Bmakes%2Bpipelines/10206719/story.html The new premier (Jim Prentice)knows the challenges… “… start with… world-class regulator and first-quality science …” . During the Northern Gateway project..our ‘regulator’ did NOT HEAR BC’ concerns and eventually concluded with 200 ‘conditions’—for the backroom experts to handle.. ? World class ?? BC is familiar with the resources export business. So, Mr. Premier please advise your ‘pipe dreamers’ to negotiate with BC officials for final routing— As for ‘FIRST QUALITY science’ demonstrating proven science for containment and recovery of ocean tanker bitumen spills in typical ocean conditions—where is it ??.The best we can do ,to help Alberta bitumen to reach world markets—is to locate bitumen tanker loading terminals where there is minimum probability of tanker spills—NOT IN DOUGLAS CHANNEL or many other busy ,environmentally sensitive areas—which would threaten Southern BC and Washington State waters and shores and our multi billion dollar ocean-waters related businesses ! The unnecessary,ill-considered Kinder Morgan project raises similar arguments..! There is a simple way to bring Alberta bitumen to the BC coast.. build one pipelines system from Alberta to Port Simpson and address BC concerns NOW– ..and get the bitumen to market quickly . Hopefully with Mr. Prentice’ fresh approach he can convince Mr. Harper to clean-up the BC pipelines MESS ?
The writer,Peter O’Neil brings forward some interesting points…The ‘unsolved problem’ of ocean bitumen spill clean up has been ‘handed off’ to Kevin Gardner ,president ,West Coast Marine Response Corporation (WCMRC) ? The public will likely wonder at Mr.Harper’s reluctance to participate in this vital research— and might be wary of this ‘deal ‘…some might agree with Gardner’s earlier (2013)observation—that ; “there should be government participation in R&D “.Ottawa FINALLY ‘figured out’ that southern BC is a high traffic, high risk area..We are fortunate to have available a relatively LOW traffic and LOW risk ‘area…NOT DOUGLAS CHANNEL, or BURRARD INLET ,or the busy shipping lanes and precious shores in Southern BC and Washington State !!Let Cabinet approve an Enbridge/Kinder Morgan , jointly managed pipeline from Alberta to Port Simpson, to deliver Alberta bitumen to world markets—We’d expect Mr. Prentice to help ‘revive’ these struggling pipelines projects…. AND help bring First Nations to ‘the table’,a vital PART OF THE SOLUTION..A CONSOLIDATED LOCATION for THE ‘ BITUMEN LOADING AND SHIPPING ’ at Port Simpson, could help with locating the special bitumen recovery equipment at this one strategic location ……
